Bigleaf Aster (Eurybia macrophylla) is a shade-loving native known for its large, heart-shaped basal leaves that form an attractive groundcover through the season. In late summer to early fall, delicate white flowers with sunny yellow centers rise above the foliage, brightening woodland edges and shaded gardens. Its blooms provide valuable late-season nectar and pollen for native bees, small butterflies, skippers, and other beneficial insects. This aster also serves as a host plant for several moth species, supporting caterpillars that feed birds and wildlife.
Bigleaf Aster spreads slowly by rhizomes, creating natural drifts that help suppress weeds. It’s an excellent choice for adding soft color and ecological value to woodland plantings.
